SUMMARY:Concrete and Stone: On the White Rocks Complex (Special Edition)
DESCRIPTION:Taking place on 17th March\, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm\, this seminar will examine the architectural\, historical\, and contemporary significance of the White Rocks Complex — a site that encapsulates the layered relationship between modernist ambition\, material expression\, and evolving public perception. \nBringing together policy and practice\, the session will feature: \nA representative from Project Green \nThe legendary British architect Michael Hirst \n\nMichael Hirst trained at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London between 1950 and 1955\, including at the Department of Tropical Architecture. Following his studies\, he spent four years in Ghana\, where he designed and built the township’s first community facilities at the new Port of Tema during its construction. He later undertook the MOQ project at St Patrick’s in Malta\, before spending five years planning and constructing two Olympic Sports Cities in Libya. Subsequently\, Hirst transitioned into management consultancy\, working primarily as a strategic planner for major project clients across the Middle East — including Saudi Arabia\, Iraq\, and Abu Dhabi — as well as in the Caribbean\, South America\, Sierra Leone\, Belgium\, and the United Kingdom\, where he continued to design and build. His career reflects an exceptional breadth of international experience\, spanning architecture\, large-scale urban development\, and strategic planning across diverse cultural and climatic contexts. \n\nPhoto by Times Tabone; https://timesofmalta.com/article/if-malta-is-a-second-home-the-phoenicia-is-his-house.955030 \n\nThrough expert insights and discussion\, the seminar will explore the dialogue between reinforced concrete and Malta’s traditional stone\, the legacy of large-scale modernist interventions\, and the broader implications for conservation\, regeneration\, and public memory. \nAs with the wider seminar series\, the event is open to architecture and design professionals\, heritage practitioners\, students\, property stakeholders\, and members of the public interested in Malta’s post-war architectural narrative. \nThis PDF contains the full programme of the event.
