SUMMARY:Concrete and Stone: Conserving Maltese Modernism
DESCRIPTION:The discourse of Maltese heritage has long centred on stone structures and traditional construction techniques\, typically associated with pre-war architecture. However\, the realm of ‘heritage’ today consists of more than vernacular or traditional architecture and includes a significant number of Maltese Modernism – albeit little recognition or protection. This gap in formal designation and public awareness has led to the systematic erosion of this critical layer of Malta’s architectural narrative. \nThe Kamra tal-Periti are organising a series of public seminars dedicated to Maltese Modernism\, a period that has played a significant role in shaping the island’s built environment yet remains relatively under-represented within mainstream cultural narratives. \nOrganised by the Kamra’s Policy Committee on Heritage\, the series will consist of five curated seminars\, aimed at a broad audience including architecture and design professionals\, heritage practitioners\, students\, property owners\, and members of the public with an interest in architecture\, culture\, and Malta’s post-war history. Through a combination of lectures\, case studies\, and discussions\, the events will highlight the architectural\, social\, and cultural value of modernist buildings\, while fostering dialogue and networking among stakeholders. \nThe Seminars will be held every two weeks\, starting Wednesday 11th March\, between 5:30 and 8:30 in the evening. Refreshments and Networking opportunities will follow and are open for all. Various guest speakers will be addressing the audience throughout the series\, covering themes such as ‘What Makes Maltese Modernism?’\, ‘Conservation of Reinforced Concrete’ and ‘Challenges in Protecting Modernist Architecture’ \nThis PDF contains the full programme of the event. Please follow the schedule to know the timing and order of all seminars. \nSee Full Programme Here!\n  \nTickets for each of the seminars will be for sale in the weeks before on this event page\, at €30 each. Members of the Kamra tal-Periti are requested to log in before purchasing the ticket\, to avail themselves from a €10 discount. \nTickets for the whole series are available now at €120\, with a €50 discount for logged-in Kamra tal-Periti members. \nLimited Seats Available. \n\nThis event is being supported by: \n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Concrete and Stone: On the White Rocks Complex (Special Edition)
DESCRIPTION:Taking place on 17th March\, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm\, this seminar will examine the architectural\, historical\, and contemporary significance of the White Rocks Complex — a site that encapsulates the layered relationship between modernist ambition\, material expression\, and evolving public perception. \nBringing together policy and practice\, the session will feature: \nA representative from Project Green \nThe legendary British architect Michael Hirst \n\nMichael Hirst trained at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London between 1950 and 1955\, including at the Department of Tropical Architecture. Following his studies\, he spent four years in Ghana\, where he designed and built the township’s first community facilities at the new Port of Tema during its construction. He later undertook the MOQ project at St Patrick’s in Malta\, before spending five years planning and constructing two Olympic Sports Cities in Libya. Subsequently\, Hirst transitioned into management consultancy\, working primarily as a strategic planner for major project clients across the Middle East — including Saudi Arabia\, Iraq\, and Abu Dhabi — as well as in the Caribbean\, South America\, Sierra Leone\, Belgium\, and the United Kingdom\, where he continued to design and build. His career reflects an exceptional breadth of international experience\, spanning architecture\, large-scale urban development\, and strategic planning across diverse cultural and climatic contexts. \n\nPhoto by Times Tabone; https://timesofmalta.com/article/if-malta-is-a-second-home-the-phoenicia-is-his-house.955030 \n\nThrough expert insights and discussion\, the seminar will explore the dialogue between reinforced concrete and Malta’s traditional stone\, the legacy of large-scale modernist interventions\, and the broader implications for conservation\, regeneration\, and public memory. \nAs with the wider seminar series\, the event is open to architecture and design professionals\, heritage practitioners\, students\, property stakeholders\, and members of the public interested in Malta’s post-war architectural narrative. \nThis PDF contains the full programme of the event. Please follow the schedule to know the timing and order of all seminars. \nSee Full Programme Here!\nTickets available through the main event page! \n  \nSeminar Series Ticket holders will be granted access to this Special Edition of Concrete and Stone.
